Ice Cream Cake Strain Description
Based out of a garage in Southern California, cannabis breeders Seed Junky Genetics originally crossed Gelato with Wedding Cake to create the Ice Cream Cake strain. Seed Junky is known for their work in focusing on terpene profiles and looking to create strains that have awesome and unique flavours.
While this strain does come with a potent 23% at times THC, one of the big things that people often note about it is the flavour – a sexy sweetness with touches of lemon, and a creaminess you’ll find delicious. You might taste a bit of nuttiness in there as well.
Interestingly, this strain also has a relatively significant CBD level – and can be as high as 1.3% according to some lab tests.
Indica lovers will likely enjoy this strain – as it is 75% Indica / 25% Sativa. The Indica effects are strong and you’ll likely want to use this an evening smoke when you’re looking forward to chilling out before a good night’s sleep.
It’s major terpene profile includes Limonene, Myrcene, Valencene, Caryophyllene, Geraniol, Camphene, Carene, and Phellandrene – a delight mix especially for its flavour profile, that Seed Junky Genetics had in mind when they created Ice Cream Cake.
While many tokers are interested in THC levels only, they are doing an injustice to not bother with the subtle qualities that terpenes and the terpene profile of a given strain – many of which actually give a cannabis strain its unique effects, flavours, and aromas. Many are only now understanding the value that terpenes offer – and one of the reasons why a particular strain may affect you differently than your smoking mate. They also can work in a synergistic and holistic way, together.
Many of these terpenes are now known to have specific benefits – both to you, and to the plant itself. Some terpenes present in some strains protect the cannabis plant from pests and infections and because so little research has gone into some of them, science isn’t sure yet what they all are capable of. But, we do know somethings:
Limonene: When your tastebuds detect the taste of lemon when you’re smoking Ice Cream Cake, its due to the high amounts of Limonene present. It can also provide a flavour reminiscent of any citrus fruit including orange, but in the case of Ice Cream Cake, combined with the other terpenes, you generally get that noticeable lemon touch.
For medical benefits, limonene is also known for it’s ability to be an anti-anxiety compound, while helping to lift moods that need some lifting. This terpene is also being examined for possible anti-cancer properties (see Phase I and pharmacokinetic study of D-limonene in patients with advanced cancer.
It is believed that limonene has a host of other health benefits as well.
Myrcene: Out of all the terpenes in cannabis, myrcene is the most abundant in general. While some terpenes are found in some strains, and not others, you’ll find that myrcene is almost ubiquitous to cannabis. Often, it is the dominant terpene at high levels with the other terpenes measuring a far distance in percentage. This terpene is also found in thyme, lemongrass, and mango – and it’s been well-researched. We know it promotes calming effects in both the mind and body, and may help to drive away negative thoughts.
Valencene: If you know anything about different types of oranges, you may have heard of Valencia Oranges, and indeed this terpene is named for this orange – as it is found in very high amounts in Valencia Oranges. On it’s own, it can deliver a strong citrus orange taste, but in the case of Ice Cream Cake, our Limonene tends to overpower this terpene in flavour.
It is known however, that valencene contributes to feelings of Euphoria, and may also contribute to alertness and cognitive function. One of it’s functions in cannabis may be to fight against pests. This terpene is also known to have properties that include being an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergen.
Caryophyllene: Another commonly found terpene throughout the various cannabis strains, Caryophyllene is also found in black pepper, basil, and cinnamon. It provides a bit of pungency in taste, and is known to be anti-inflammatory.
Geraniol: If you noticed a connection to that favourite flowering plant your grandma had – geraniums, you got the connection! Geraniol is found in geranium plants, but it is also present in Rose Oil, lemon, and citronella oil – and could also be present in some cannabis strains as a protection against pest infestation.
When the weed you are smoking contains Myrcene, and also contains Geraniol, you have a synergistic effect as Geraniol can help with the synthesis of Myrcene.
Camphene: You might love to learn more about camphene – especially if you consume a lot of Ice Cream Cake weed! It’s an interesting terpene with several benefits and qualities that include an ability to reduce pain, fights inflammation, and may also be anti-fungal. It’s presence is also found in nutmeg and rosemary.
Carene: Do you hate the side effect that some cannabis strains make you go through like “red-eye” and dry mouth? You might be able to “thank” Carene for this – but don’t be too harsh when you find out that there are also benefits this compound offers. Carene is known to help with inflammation, promotes alertness, as well as memory retention. Some of you may recall back in your high school/college/university days of studying and cramming before an exam and discovering if you toked up while you were cramming, you did well on the exams. This might have had to do with the levels of carene in your joints!
Phellandrene: Mostly thought of as a terpene that adds some aroma of mint and wood, but in fact, it is now thought to perhaps also be helpful in reducing pain, increasing energy levels, and possibly fight off cancer cells. More research is needed on Phellandrene, but it is often used as an additive in cosmetic products for it’s delightful aroma enhancing qualities, especially that scents of a woody or herbaceous scent.
Expected Effects Of Ice Cream Cake Flower
So what can you expect from this 75% Indica, with THC levels that can approach 75%, and all those interesting terpenes? Depending on you as an individual, generally speaking, you’ll think of this strain as a night time strain, not to be used when needing all your faculties for operating machines, or needing to be alert. You’ll love this strain though, in the evening, when you want to feel totally relaxed, blissful, and later, possibly feeling sedated and locked to your couch if you didn’t make it to bed.
After your first couple of tokes, you will likely feel a burst of mental energy as it creeps up into the cerebral areas as negative thoughts get pushed away. While you might want to smoke with friends, it’s also a perfect smoke when you’re alone after that mental energy kicks in; it will soon creep throughout the body, leaving you with the mental state of bliss as your body enters a full relaxation.
